Marketing Horror Stories

While setting up Halloween and fall decorations around my house and office I started thinking about the marketing horror stories some of our clients have told us. One of the most common stories is that they paid a lot of money for a website to be created but they were not given any back end control over the site, they did not own their domain name and were being held hostage on the developers server. Some had to pay more each time they needed a change and wait a long time to get a change. Others could not reach the designer anymore to even request a change. Many did not have any site analytic data or know about their campaign results or conversion goals. One time, I remember calling about an out of date shopping cart. I spent five hours on the phone over a few days being passed around from department to department while the huge web design company tried to find the customers site. The site had been lost in the many mergers, the shopping cart being used was not supported anymore and once they found the site the answer was that I could not access the shopping cart to make an edit but I could buy a brand new shopping cart for 3k! No thanks. Many clients have taken the “free website” bait offered by the big web companies only to be disappointed with their template site, lack of options and plethora of upgrades needed to make the site function properly.
